Periodontal Disease

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection. It affects the tissues and bone that support the teeth.
Healthy gum tissue fit like a cuff around each tooth. When someone has periodontal disease, the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth. As the disease gets worse, the tissue and bone that support the tooth are damaged. Over time, teeth may fall out or need to be removed. Treating periodontal disease in the early stages can help prevent tooth loss.

Periodontal Disease and Whole Body Health

Periodontal disease has been linked to some other diseases. People with diabetes or heart disease are more likely to get periodontal disease. Strokes and high stress also may related to periodontal disease. Researchers are still studying these links.

Updates on Texas Medicaid/Chip for Children Dentistry

There have been quite some changes in 2012 in Texas Medicaid/Chip program for children dentistry. Here we briefly explain them in several articles.

First of all, each child with Medicaid/Chip has to select a program: MCNA, Delta, or DentaQuest. The program can be freely selected by the child’s legal guardian; if no selection is made, a program will be assigned by the system.

Once a program is selected, a dentist must be chosen as the child’s main dentist, or main dental home. The dentist can be freely selected by the child’s legal guardian; if no selection is made, a dentist (who participates in the Medicaid/Chip program) will be assigned by the system. The selection process only takes a phone call, usually a minute or two and will be effective immediately. This implies that the child can go to almost any dentist and get services, provided that the legal guardian calls and chooses the dentist as the main dentist on the Medicaid/chip program, before dental treatments are performed.

If you have any further questions, please visit our medicaid page for more information. Feel free to call our Plano based office. We accept Medicaid/Chip for all three programs: Delta, DentaQuest, and MCNA.
