Tooth decay can happen as soon as the baby’s teeth come in. Decay in children teeth can lead to cavities and pain. Left untreated, it can destroy the teeth of an infant or young child.

Babies have a higher risk for decay if their teeth are in contact with sugary liquids often or for long periods of time. These include fruit juice and soda. Bacteria in the mouth feed on the sugar in the drinks and the bacteria releases acids to attack teeth.

Never put your baby to bed with a bottle or use a bottle as a pacifier. Do not dip the pacifier in sugar/honey. Do not put it in your mouth either before giving to the baby. Cavity causing bacteria in your mouth can be passed to your baby.

Your child’s baby teeth help your child chew and speak normally. They will also hold space in the jaws for the adult teeth that come in later. Starting infants with good oral care can help protect their teeth for decades to come.

A baby’s teeth start to erupt when the baby is about 6 months old. By the age of 3, most children will have a full set of 20 primary teeth. These primary teeth will be lost starting at age of 6, to give space for permanent teeth. By the age of 21, a person usually have a full set of adult teeth.

The picture below shows the names of baby teeth. It also depicts when each baby tooth will usually erupts and is shed. Notice that not all children get the same teeth at the same times. Your child may have teeth come in earlier or later than the time shown.

Flossing is very important for your child’s teeth. While brushing can clean the surface of the teeth, it cannot reach between the teeth.

At A Smile Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend parents to use dental floss to remove bits of food and plaque from under the gumline and between the teeth for your child, everyday. If you have trouble using a floss, you can use a dental flosser (with handle and special picks). These are available in most grocery stores or pharmacies in the Plano, Frisco, Allen area.

The parents will need to brush the child’s teeth till about 6 years old. By age 6 or 7, the children should be able to do that by themselves. Here are some tips for proper brushing.

The ADA recommends a pea-sized drop of tooth paste for children with age 2-6. For children under 2, use only water unless your pediatric dentist recommends toothpaste instead.

Place the tooth brush against the gums.

Move the brush back and forth in short strokes gently. Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower. Repeat the same for inside surfaces and chewing surfaces.

Finish by brushing the tongue to help freshen breath and remove bacteria.

Your child’s teeth may look an entire whole, soild block but actually it is not. It is indeed a living things composed of many layers. In the center of a tooth, it is a space called pulp. The pulp holds all the nerves and blood vessels. Outside next to the pulp is the dentin, a soft tissue layer. Next to the dentin which we see is the enamel, the hard surface part protecting the dentin.

The top part of a tooth is called crown and the bottom part is called root.

A tooth has to rely on the ligament and other issues to be hold onto the jawbone. If the teeth are firmly held to the jaw, the child can speak and eat normally. If the teeth and gum are not healthy, speech and eating will be affected.

Cavities are caused by tooth decay. Tooth decay is a diease that damages and breaks down teeth. If not treated in time and properly, tooth decay can leads to pain, loss of teeth, and loss of confidence. Children with tooth pain may also miss school days owing to reduced sleep time or food in take. Even more severe, an abscess from a cavity can lead to serious infection and can even be life threatening.

Your child’s teeth begin to form during the second month of your pregancy. It is important for you to eat healthy and balanced diet in order for your baby to develop health teeth.

Protein, vitamins A, C, D, and minerals like calcium and phosphorous are all important. If you do not get enough of these nutritions, enamel of the teeth may not form normally for your child. This can make your child more likely to develop cavities later on.
